Why Don’t You Work at a Hospital

Why Don’t You Work at the Hospital

I can’t tell you how often I run in to people that know I hold my Nursing License, and they ask “Why don’t you work at the hospital?” It’s a logical question. I went to nursing school, graduated pretty high in my class, and my instructors loved me, so why don’t I work at a hospital?

The answer is rather simple. I fell in love.

I fell in love with the way people with intellectual disabilities smile. The way they are told their entire life “You can’t do that” and yet they do it anyway. Things like getting there driver’s license, college education, or living on their own.  I fell in love with the way they choose to live.

Compass Gave Me Joy

When I applied at Compass SLS & ILS, I applied as a Community Support Specialist (CSS). Meaning, I left a job that paid twice as much for not just one reason, but two: I love people with intellectual disabilities and I love Siskiyou County. Compass gave me both and it didn’t matter what I was reimbursed for my time because Compass gave me joy every single shift. For the past 5 years, I’ve been the wizard behind the curtain. People hear of me and my clients and because of the dedication of my clients to their goals, Siskiyou has made a significant stamp on the Compass map.

So, I’ll go back to my original question “Why don’t I work in a hospital?” I think people it should be another question.  Instead it should be “Why do you work for Compass SLS & ILS?” Well, I’m glad you asked! I work for Compass because my bosses are two of the kindest souls I’ve ever met. They don’t just fight hard for our clients, they fight hard for their staff.  They fight for their clients to experience things they otherwise never would, like unconditional love.

They fight for their staff to better themselves through education, promotion, and quality time as a team. I’ve worked for Compass for nearly 5 years, and I can honestly say I have never once had a bad day at work. Not because I don’t have a difficult job, but because I know at any point I can pick up my phone and call over a dozen people that will always have my back. People who know just what to say to make me feel powerful, loved and valued are only a text or email away.

Team Member of the Year

I was fortunate enough to be selected at the Team Member of the Year for 2015 and was gifted the vacation of a lifetime – a week paid in Lake Tahoe. Like seriously, if you are reading this you should be asking yourself “Why don’t I work for Compass?!” For an entire week, I was able to reflect, rejuvenate, and reevaluate all sorts of things. Compass has given me opportunities I have never had before. They offer me the freedom to grow as a person and manager. Compass offers me the opportunity to love and be loved every single day. Sadie & Eric, thank you. Thank you for always believing in the twenty something year old wizard behind the curtain. Thank you for always believing in my clients and all their dreams. Most importantly, thank you for believing in Siskiyou.

We may live where the elevation far surpasses population, but we are mighty and strong.

With your support in our sails, Siskiyou will continue to flourish.  So, why don’t I work in a hospital? Compass is and will always be my home.
