The Love That Held Emily Close

By Josh Flom, Director of Services

A Family Worth Fighting For

We are excited to take a moment to celebrate one of our incredible clients in the Coordinated Family Support program, Emily from Fort Bragg. Her journey with Compass has been nothing short of inspiring, and we are honored to recognize the transformation that has taken place since she and her family joined us in January 2025.

Emily comes from a large family. She has nine siblings, and when we first met the Peterson family, they were facing an incredibly difficult situation. There was serious concern that the siblings would be separated and placed in different housing situations or group homes across the state. The fear of a split was very real, and even the possibility of Emily being moved four hours away from her loved ones was on the table.

Looking Beyond the Labels

At that time, Emily had been labeled as “behavioral” or “challenging,” often showing physical aggression such as hitting, scratching, and even biting. But as we know, labels never tell the whole story. They do not define a person, and they certainly do not capture the fullness of who Emily is.

Through steady guidance, consistent advocacy, and the compassionate persistence of the Compass team, Emily’s story began to change.

A Team That Believed in Her

Thanks to an extraordinary collaboration between the CFS and SLS teams, along with a deep commitment to person-centered support, Emily was able to avoid being separated from her siblings.

Instead of being moved away, she stayed close to home. She remained connected to the people who know and love her most. Today, Emily is thriving in ways many thought were not possible.

A Life No Longer Defined by Fear

Emily’s progress is a powerful reminder of what can happen when we lead with hope, compassion, and belief in our clients’ potential. She is now living her best life surrounded by family, and the challenges of her past are no longer the defining headline of her story.

Her transformation would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of the SLS team, who poured their hearts into making sure her dreams and her family stayed intact.

The Impact of Coordinated Care

To the whole Compass crew supporting the Peterson family, thank you. This is the impact of coordinated, compassionate care.

Emily’s story reminds us why this work matters so deeply. It shows what can happen when people refuse to give up, when teams work together, and when a family is given the chance to remain whole. At the heart of it all is a young woman whose story is still being written with hope, dignity, and love.
