Dan’s Journey to Independence
Dan, whose full name is William, prefers to go by his middle name—just “Dan.” He joined Compass in March 2020, bringing with him a quiet spirit and a dream: to one day live in his own home.
From Group Living to Dream Home
When Dan first joined Compass, he shared that he had lived in a group home with several others. His biggest goal was to have a place to call his own. That dream became reality through Compass. Over the years, he’s lived with two different roommates and now shares a spacious 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom house with an SLS roommate and an ILS client. The three friends support one another and enjoy their life together.
A Gentle Heart with a Big “Cheeser”
Dan is known for his kind nature and his big, joyful smile—what he lovingly calls his “Cheeser.” One especially touching moment came when his roommate was hospitalized, and Dan, full of concern, insisted on visiting. When he saw his friend, he gently grabbed his hand, smiled wide, and asked staff to take their picture. It was a powerful reflection of his deep care for others.
From Apartment to True Home
Though Dan once dreamed of living in an apartment and achieved that, he now says living in a house feels like his dream truly came true. “It feels more like home,” he says with contentment.
Community and Connection
Dan attends the Siskiyou Opportunity Center (SOC) three days a week, where he especially enjoys sitting in the sun and chatting with friends. He also joins Compass outings, and his favorite by far is the Carrville Retreat—full of art, games, good food, and the big swing he loves.
Daily Life and Shared Meals
At home, Dan helps plan weekly meals with his roommates and staff. They cook together, share food, and sit down for family-style dinners. Evenings often end with relaxing TV time.
A Familiar Face in Yreka
Dan has become somewhat of a local celebrity in Yreka, California. Known for his warm greetings and gentlemanly handshakes, people often stop him just to say hi.
Adventures and Artistic Expression
Though he no longer travels as much as he once did with Trips Inc., Dan fondly shares memories from those days. Now, he enjoys holidays with family and expressing his creativity through art. He’s created a whole book of hand-drawn maps and scenes from Fort Jones and Etna, which he proudly shares with visitors.
Living His Best Life
Dan’s presence brings joy to everyone around him. His story is a beautiful reminder of how powerful it is when someone’s dreams are honored and supported.
