Kim is a wonderfully life filled young lady with Downs Syndrome, in her early 30s. She is detailed, intentional, and meticulous and cares about how her world functions and how others receive her.
She greatly values commitment, longevity and loyalty in her staff. She came to be an SLS client for Compass in January of 2017. Kim originally came from living with her brother, Doug, in Weed and previously, Weaverville, with her mom. Her first few meetings with us were memorable at best. Simply, she wouldn’t see anyone. She remained locked in her room, in silence. She often times would throw in the trash what was given to her by others if it wasn’t exactly what she had desired. Kim was in charge, and that was it.
Through intent, persistence, gentleness and consistency, Kim’s staff began to make progress. Within 8 months, Kim not only moved in with a new roommate in Hornbrook, Myra; but has since learned to manage roommate disagreements, has learned to express her words and communicate via written notes and letters. Kim now leaves her room and comes out of her room for community on a regular basis. She has opened up and allowed staff to come into her room, to provide prompts, to encourage her to accept the things others offer her. She is very assertive, but is learning how to express herself in a way that doesn’t put others down in the process. Kim loves communication and choices. Kim is known for regularly enjoying her walks, writing to her new Pen Pal in Redding, and cooking new recipes with her staff.
When recently interviewed, Kim said she wanted to be known as someone who cares for others, for someone who likes to make her shopping lists from watching commercials, for being a person who loves a few select friends to be close and that she will only accept name brand items at the store. Kim stated, “She is content to pay the extra dollar to have the best.”
Kim is happy, home, and growing. She is a success in every meaning of the word. SLS has been the best next step in her life of independence and autonomy. Kim we are excited to see you continuing to grow and become more you each and every day.
