Ashley joined the Compass community towards the end of 2015. We are thrilled to have her on our team! I wanted to get into her bubble somewhat and learn more about her. See for yourselves the awesome team member we have among us!
Can you tell me about your background (experience & education)?
I graduated from San Jose State University with my Bachelor’s in Social Work in the spring of 2015. During my studies, I completed an internship with the Santa Cruz County Probation department assisting their domestic violence probation officer. I also completed an internship with Community Solutions in their Solutions to Violence program, through which I was trained as an advocate for domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. As a certified sexual assault advocate, I specialized in working with children and teens 14 and under; specifically, with peer counseling, facilitating support groups, local resource referrals, community outreach, police and medical accompaniment, crisis response and legal advocacy.
Why did you pick this field?
I chose social work because I want to make a positive impact on my community. I have been volunteering in my community since I was 12, and have always had a passion for working with people and helping them with their needs. When I discovered that I could make a career out of helping people, I knew it was something I wanted to do. And now, I love coming to work every day because I’m following that dream!
Why did you pick Compass?
When I was looking for jobs, I really wanted to focus on the type of company that I worked with. It is important to me that where I work and what I do has a positive impact on my community and I want to work with kind, caring, compassionate people who love what they do, too. I chose Compass because I was impressed by the teamwork, support, and passion I saw here, and I instantly wanted to be part of the positive impact that Compass is making in the world.
What are most excited about in your new job?
I am most excited about meeting clients and staff. I love making those connections and having the opportunity to help someone when they need it. I’m also excited about the people that I get to work with. I love being part of a team; to me, it’s the perfect way to learn from each other and support each other.
What is something we would be surprised to learn about you?
Haha I’m slightly obsessed with all things Harry Potter. They were the books that sparked my love of reading as a kid.
“If you never change your mind, why have one?” –Edward de Bono
This one actually came to me in a fortune cookie but it has stuck with me through the years, and I later discovered it was a quote by British psychologist Edward de Bono. To me, this quote reminds me that we are all only human and we are allowed to change our minds about things. Change can be hard but sometimes staying in an unhappy situation is worse for you than trying something new. This quote reminds me to have courage and follow my dreams, even if those dreams change and evolve over time.
What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
I enjoy hanging out with friends, hiking, exploring new things in the bay area, taking photos, happy hours, doing puzzles, and a lot of Netflix marathons. I also love to read; I am currently re-reading the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini.
Can you tell me about an experience that changed your life for the better?
At 15, I went on a student Ambassador trip to Italy and Greece. It sparked a passion for travel, history, architecture, and photography. I made great connections with peers on the trip, met so many new local people, and enjoyed the rich culture and history. When I came back from my trip it also helped me have the courage to be more open and social. I figured if I could handle going to two countries without my parents, I could handle high school. Believe it or not, I used to be much more quiet and shy than I am now!
